Mental Health Awareness of Michiana (MHAM) Receives Grant from Valinhos Foundation to launch a Maternal Mental Health Project
Mental Health Awareness of Michiana, a nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating stigma and removing barriers to mental health care, is thrilled to announce that it has been awarded a grant from the Valinhos Foundation. The grant will begin the development of a groundbreaking initiative for our community – the Maternal Mental Health Project.
MHAM and the Valinhos Foundation recognize the critical need for pregnant and postpartum women experiencing significant stress and mental health conditions to get effective and culturally responsive support and treatment improving maternal and neonatal outcomes throughout Michiana. The Project will develop a diverse workforce trained in perinatal mood disorders composed of peer support specialists, master’s level interns, health and mental health professionals. With the support of the Valinhos Foundation, MHAM will develop and implement a comprehensive program that educates, screens, supports, and provides effective and culturally sensitive care to pregnant and postpartum women in Michiana.
“We know that 15-20% of childbearing women experience diagnosable mental health conditions during pregnancy and the postpartum period. This opportunity will expand services to pregnant and postpartum women in Michiana. Timely access to culturally responsive and effective support promotes a healthier, more resilient community. We are thrilled to partner with the Valinhos Foundation. This is a significant moment for Mental Health Awareness of Michiana and for the birthing community in Michiana,” Lisa Kelly, Executive Director.
The Valinhos Foundation, which was founded by Anita and Tom Veldman of South Bend, Indiana, aims to make a difference in the lives of youth, adolescents, and families in and around St. Joseph County with a focus on the greatest mental health and well-being needs in the community. This grant underscores the Foundation’s dedication to advancing mental health initiatives in our community. The Foundation believes investing in maternal mental health is vital in creating a more compassionate and resilient society.
