Mental Health Awareness of Michiana Awarded Valinhos Foundation Grant for Second Year to Launch Maternal Mental Health Project
South Bend, IN — Mental Health Awareness of Michiana (MHAM) is proud to announce it has received a second consecutive grant from the Valinhos Foundation to expand a vital new initiative – the Maternal Mental Health Project.
This new grant allows MHAM to expand outreach to perinatal fathers and partners, a population left out of most maternal and newborn communications and services. With the generous support of the Valinhos Foundation, MHAM will begin building a robust program that offers education, screening, and mental health services specifically tailored to the unique needs of mothers, fathers, and partners.
“Approximately 15–20% of women experience significant mental health conditions during pregnancy and the postpartum period,” said Lisa Kelly, Executive Director of MHAM. “ The mental health needs of partners and fathers is also important; 10% of new fathers have perinatal mood changes. This initiative will make a real difference in the lives of local families. By expanding services and building a diverse and well-trained maternal mental health workforce, we’re promoting healthier beginnings – for mothers, fathers, babies, and our community as a whole.”
The Maternal Mental Health Project will bring together peer support specialists, master’s level interns, and trained health and mental health professionals to create a network of care that is not only evidence-based but deeply grounded in cultural responsiveness and community connection.
The Valinhos Foundation, founded by Anita and Tom Veldman of South Bend, focuses on supporting the mental health and well-being of youth, adolescents, and families in St. Joseph County. Their continued partnership with MHAM reflects a shared commitment to addressing urgent mental health needs in our region.
“We are honored to work alongside the Valinhos Foundation once again,” said Kelly. “Their belief in the power of mental health care to transform lives aligns perfectly with our mission and vision for a more resilient Michiana.”
