This month, Mental Health Awareness of Michiana would like to thank those who helped us visualize and bring to life our first-ever mental health art exhibit – ‘Journey of the Mind Through Visual Artistic Expression’.
This event – possible with the stewardship of Pam Blair, Sue Elfin, Kristina Fuller, Lisa Kelly, Jan Marable, Kamika Perry, and Jennifer Sweazy – sought to bring together artists of all ages and skill levels throughout Michiana, to explore themes of mental health, mental struggles, and recovery through art.
“We are incredibly fortunate these five local artists volunteered their time and expertise,” said Lisa Kelly, MHAM Executive Director. “The call for submissions, vetting the pieces and curating the exhibit all were made easier because of their contributions. They are a fantastic team.”
“Volunteers are essential to the success of events,” said Jan Marable, MHAM Education & Events Coordinator. “Their contributions provide the necessary manpower and a variety of skills, ensuring that every aspect is executed effectively.”
Some of our volunteers share their thoughts with us on the opportunity ‘Journey’ afforded them:
Kamika Perry (Creative Spaces Coordinator for the St. Joseph County Library, Co-Owner Eyedea Studio, Co-Owner Perry Vine, Co-Owner The Bend Lounge)
What have you enjoyed about volunteering on the Journey of the Mind exhibit?
“It’s one of the greatest passions of mine to make sure artists have a platform and opportunities to showcase, or exhibit their work.”
“Partnering with MHAM was a coming together of a group of individuals with different backgrounds and experiences to share a common goal. I’ve greatly enjoyed sharing this passion with a team of like-minded individuals.”
“Art is one of the few things in life that can speak from heart to heart. It speaks to our humanity and our minds and being able to be part of something that’s a positive impact is truly humbling, and I’m eternally grateful.”
Jen Sweazy (Assistant Director of Prevention & Early Intervention, Boys and Girls Clubs of the Northern Indiana Corridor)
What have you enjoyed about volunteering on the Journey of the Mind exhibit?
“I have enjoyed collaborating with other artists and professionals in the area and making this inaugural exhibit something the community can now look forward to each year!”
“Partnering with MHAM is just one way to get further resources and information to the community regarding mental health and further break the stigma. Thank you Lisa and Jan for your vision in bringing this exhibit to life!”
Sue Elfin (local artist)
“It’s been satisfying to help get art out into a public space, in this case the Elkhart Public Library. I love the pairing of books with art!”
“I hadn’t known much about the critical advocacy work done by MHAM, so I’ve enjoyed learning about this wonderful, affirming organization. I love the concept of highlighting the creative process as a pathway to well-being.”
